Spring City Plein Air Competition

plein air, 12" x 16", oil, 'End of 5th West'

This is a painting of the last intersection of my small town in Mount Pleasant, Utah. I have passed this scene often while riding my horse and thought it was a beautiful setting. On Thursday after school, I drove my ATV to this spot with my gear and painted this for the Spring City Plein Air Competition held this weekend.

Three Peaks Recreation Area

plein air, 9" x 12", oil, 'Three Peaks'

Three Peaks is a popular recreation area located about 10 miles northwest of Cedar City, Utah. The area's rolling hills and volcanic rock formations provide fantastic terrain to paint. Large junipers and pink granite compete for space. The igneous intrusions that created Three Peaks brought iron, which deposited in nearby limestone. Hmmm... Iron County, Utah.

I was introduced to this area by Cedar City plein air painters Brad Holt and Mary Jabens. The wind was blowing so hard on our visit, it knocked over my painting and new Strada easel. I think nature, consequently, has a way of testing patience and hopefully improving art work!

Camping Spot

plein air, 9" x 12", oil, 'Aspens'

Crisp mountain air, shade, passing thunderstorms, a cracklin' fire with hot dogs and s'mores. What can get better than this? Love + Laughter = Happy Family!

Inspirada!

plein air, 9" x 12", oil, 'Potters Pond'

Potters Pond is located in a high mountain valley next to two sparkling ponds at an elevation of 8,900 feet. Pines and grasses cover the area, and aspens dot the surrounding mountainsides in the Manti-La Sal National Forest. The ponds offer great fishing for rainbow trout, with scenic views from the shore.

This is another favorite place for me to spend a few days with family and take in the beauty, only 37 miles from my home in Utah.
